The Return of the Moaning Rhino

Perhaps an unusual title for this posting, unless, of course, you've ridden with us in the last year or so, then it makes perfect sense. But, more on that later.

First, a wee bit of commentary regarding last weekend's chilly rides. We had a delayed start because of the temps and some persistent lobbying by a certain unnamed rider who ultimately didn't show up anyway, stating it was too cold. It was in fact cold, but not awful. I think there were 8 of us who headed out on the Dog Track/ Gulf Beach Loop last Saturday. It was a beautiful sunny morning, albeit chilly.

The pace down Jackson, Hwy 98 and across Dog Track was moderate to easy. The sprint on Dog Track was more of a surge than an actual sprint. We stopped to fill the bottles at the Tom Thumb at Gulf Beach Hwy and uh...Gulf Beach Hwy. Strange intersection. After a few minutes of telling stories about the Senior Games last summer, (Jim Britnell declaring that this year he is actually going to train for it...great, and he's in my age group!) we headed for Navy Point and the infamous Fried Twinkie Sprint.

The Foxinator, (usual winner of the FTS. He loves fried spongecake), was not in the peloton so a couple of the others had high hopes, that at long last they may, in fact, take home the deep fried morsel. Keith "Big Motor" Irwin was on the nose as we headed onto the Point Road. There was a surge from the back and the others chased. Once caught, it was the Big Motor himself pulling right up until the last corner when one of the big Clydesdale boys jumped around him for the win.

Good fun and the fried trophy stays in the Clydesdale family for yet another week! Those behemoths! And, speaking of behemoths...

The Moaning Rhino made a showing on last Sunday's ride for the first time in more than 6 weeks. The awful sound could be heard for blocks whenever a slowdown requiring a touch of the brakes was needed. You see, the Rhino is actually Coolio. Well, at least his wheels, or should we say his rims. As story has it, Coolio, ever mindful of trying to make his machine another milligram lighter and always aware of the best price, found a carbon wheelset on line.

He claims it is "fine Italian equipment!" There are others that think he purchased the wheels from a sweat shop in Cambodia. Regardless, they make a most unusual sound when Bobby hits the brakes. "Sounds like a Rhino in heat!", explained one cyclist when asked what that terrible sound was. Thus, the new Coolio nickname was born; Moaning Rhino.

Welcome back Bobby. And, thanks! It is great to have a surge of Blog fodder!!!

The weather for Saturday's ride looks perfect! The forecast is for 50s and sunshine at 8am and improving into the 60s before rides end. Therefore, no need to delay the start time so we are cleared for take-off at 8am at Firestone and Summit. Looks like a ride in the Hammock...Hurst Hammock that is! "Don't forget, it is easier to get into the Hammock than it is to get out."

As always, check out all the details on the Rides Calendar at the bottom of this Blogulation. And I'll...

See you out on the road,
Bob

Ride Schedule CHANGE

I received a text today from David Mayo. He suggested we change the ride start time this afternoon so that folks could spend time together watching the Playoff Games this afternoon. Uh, I'll be watching the Tour Down Under! Regardless, the weather is beautiful and I'm looking forward to a ride with the most unusual group of characters in the peloton.

Therefore, the start time today is changed from 3pm to 2pm at Firestone and Summit. We will do a new loop of about 25 miles...come on!

As always, all the details are on the Rides Calendar at the bottom of this Blogazoidal. Until then, I'll...

See you out on the road,

Ride Schedule CHANGE

Tomorrow morning's ride start time has been changed due to the chilly temperatures forecast. However we will still be starting from the Fish and Wildlife Center at the foot of 17th Street at 3 Mile Bridge intersection, (west side of 17th Street). We will start at 10am instead of 8am.

We also modified the route because a few of you were concerned about getting home late. We will be doing the Dogtrack/Navy Point Loop with the group favorite Fried Twinkie Sprint!

Inside scoop: Bring your sprinting legs if you love fried twinkies. Word on the street is that the King of Fried Twinkies, (KOFT) Tim "Spongecake" Fox (that dude has more nicknames), will be absent from tomorrow's ride due to a previous engagement...VIP tour of Hostess factory where they make Twinkies.

Also, I have inside information that one of our very own MIAs will make an appearance at tomorrow's ride...yes, it's true, the man himself, Count Fishbone will be riding, (and no doubt throwing it down in the FTS). If you've never met a real Count, come on out for the chance of a lifetime. He said something about wanting to see the new, "retooled" Coolio at the top of the Barrancas Bridge! (in his rearview mirror)

As always, all the details are on the Rides Calendar at the bottom of this Blogulation. And I'll...

The Retroman is Back, plus a Bit of Commentary

I have been enjoying a few quiet rides on my own lately. I cruise mostly northeastern Pensacola but on occasion wander west. These days I have some extra time that I wouldn't normally have to ride. So, I have been riding when the day is at it's warmest...nice! Another benefit is I run into riders I would not usually see out on the road. Guys like Chung, Myron, Happy and I actually saw someone that I was sure had moved to another area. Yes, I have two confirmed sightings of the Senior Games Silver Medalist himself, Dave "Retro" Henderson! It appears to me that he may be doing the Double Secret Workout Regiment. I would not be surprised to see him at our first Hammerfest in March.

And, speaking of Double Secret Workouts; what is up with Harland "Happy" Williams?! On our ride this past Saturday, (group fave Pine Forest Loop), Happy amazed everyone with his sprinting prowess. This is remarkable considering he is more renown for his climbing abilities.

You see, there we were rolling down Long Leaf with our turn to the north on Interstate (not 10, just the name of the road), and the pace quickened substantially in anticipation of the sprint at the end of Interstate at Pine Forest Road. Happy was pulling for a good kilometer or so and then the bodacious Brit himself Keith "Big Motor" Irwin took over. At this point the peloton was pretty much shredded with only Left Lane, Gianni Bugno, Happy, Big Motor and myself left as the road curved westward. The Bodacious Brit had the hammer down!

With about 2k left, the Big Motor decides he wants some relief and pulls over to drift to the back of the now mid to upper 20s paceline. However, it appeared that he wasn't the only one wanting a rest as the pace quickly dropped as the group spread across the road. The drivers in this race were eyeballing each other to determine whose motor had the highest octane fuel for the ride to the line. Just then Left Lane took off with Gianni on his wheel followed by the Brit, myself and then the albeit too quiet Happy at the rear.

Left Lane gave up the ghost with about 500 meters to go, (showing us how to do a suicide pull), so Gianni had a go and so did the Big Motor himself...uh, I try not to go into the red zone when the weather is chilly...it's an upper respiratory illness thing, besides I was really enjoying watching this sprint develop. Gianni, Keith and Left Lane were throwing it down with my money on the Bodacious Brit when out of nowhere comes one of Snow Whites very own! Happy took off up the left side with a jump that would have impressed Mark Cavendish himself. He crossed the line a good 40 meters ahead of 2nd place Keith, Gianni and Left Lane.

And, thus confirming our suspicions that Happy is, in fact, doing Double Secret Workouts!

Good fun! However, if you missed it, don't fret yourself...we have another ride planned for this Saturday! Although, I think it will be delayed an hour or two because of the chilly temps forecast. Stay tuned for updates on the start time. I''ll post it on the Rides Calendar as well as send out a mass email when we decide a time. And, until then I'll...

See you out on the road,
Bob

Ride Schedule CHANGE

We are changing the start time for the ride tomorrow morning from 9am to 10am. The reason for the change is the chilly weather coupled with no minor amount of cajoling, coercing and coverting...I was like, "What the rojocci is this?" (pronounced: roe jockee) But, we are a group that tries to meet the needs of the majority, even if it makes a certain rider the laughingstock of a certain cycling club in a certain town in NW Ohio...at least if they ever read that we changed a ride because the temperature was too cold at 45 degrees!

Anyway, here are the details: Saturday at 10am at Firestone and Summit.

We will still be doing the Pine Forest Loop and we will still be making a Starbucks stop!

Come on out for a great winter ride of about 40 miles at an easy to moderate pace. (See Pace Chart) Looks like a weather forecast of temps in the low 50s with plenty of bright sunshine and a hint of a breeze out of the north...nice!

See you out on the road,
Bob

Ride Change and MLK Day Ride

Last Saturday's ride was one of the best rides we have had during this winter season. Good group, I think we had 10 or 12 riders. We headed out to the Lillian/Bauer Loop under sunny, chilly skies. However, as we were rolling down Jackson, Woody "The Stud" Chandler suggested we try an alternative route to Hwy 98. So, we jogged over to Lillian Hwy at Old Corey Field Rd. At some point we ran into David "Bad Mayonaisse" Mayo as he was driving back home after sharing at a prayer breakfast earlier. I guess that's a good enough reason for not showing up for a ride.

The pace down Lillian Hwy was moderate with Tim "No Squeaks" Fox, (a reference to his machine), doing most of the work at the front. After the turn on 98 we chose to stop at Bauer Road to fill the bottles. The pace on Bauer was pleasant with myself, Left Lane and Gianni Bugno taking turns at the front. I really like Bauer, but would never ride it alone. The surface is fine, but no shoulder and although the traffic is sparse, the speed limit is 45 to 55mph. However, with a large group the motorists give us room.

Upon turning onto Gulf Beach Hwy and starting to head for home, Rusty "The Mayor" Rood put the hammer down. Usually sitting quiet in the back, this out of character move from the big Clydesdale boy was met with no small amount of amazement by all. The Rustmeister had the bit between the teeth as he motored down the road at 22-23mph+, pulling the entire peloton! I still smile when I think of him at the front. The big boy can motor!

We rolled into Navy Point and the pace cranked up as the boys neared the Fried Twinkie Sprint. Several were vying for position as they rounded the final turn. However, there can be but one winner, and it was another big Clydesdale, Tim "Foxinator" Fox edged out a number of others just as they crossed the line! Tim loves a hot fried twinkie.

The rest of the route home was uneventful with one exception...Carol Ann Chandler again has won the weekly Shebeast Award! First one for the New Year 2011. Congratulations to Carol Ann!!!

Great ride for January! Looks like we will have another great ride this Saturday as well...may be a bitter chillier though. Therefore, we are delaying the start time one hour until 9am. We will be doing the Pine Forest Loop with a Starbucks stop!

Also, Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr Day. Many of you have the day off and the weather forecast looks good so we have scheduled a ride for Monday morning at 9am. As always...

Please see the Rides Calendar for all the details, and I'll...

See you out on the road,
Bob

And the Winners Are...

Thanks to all who responded to the first ever Firestone and Summit Blogazoidal Contest. It was fun seeing the answers and I think a great way to kick off a New Year of cycling. For those of you who didn't respond, please give it a go next time. There's no tricks or gimmicks; nobody is trying to get your email address so they can send you a boatload of junk mail...nope just good clean fun, kinda like our riding...kinda. Besides, we already have your address!

Before I reveal the winners, here are the answers to the 3 questions posed in our contest. I think you will find these fascinating.

1. Question: What was the total number of times our Blog was viewed in the year 2010?
Answer: A total of 6,146 views!
This is amazing considering we only started this thing in June.

2. Question: What are the top 3 most viewed postings on our Blog?
Answer: 1. "A Weekend for SSORES" 7.30.10
2. "Rides This Weekend...and A Shocking Revelation" 7.9.10
3. "Two Not So Subtle Reminders" 10.4.10
I find the popularity of these three very curious. The number one most viewed posting was just about riding in the heat. The number of views more than doubled the views of the second most viewed. The second one was a fabrication regarding The Professor's allegations about Coolio's bike motor. The third of course is all about the two crashes within our group, i.e. David "Lawman" Carroll and Harland "Happy" Williams.

3. Question: From the list below, name the top 3 countries, other than the United States, with the most viewers of our Blog.
Answer: Here are the countries in order, other than the U.S.A., with the most viewers:
1. Canada
2. Japan
3. China
4. Georgia
5. Germany
6. Italy
7. Russia
8. Denmark
9. Poland
10. Krispy Kreme Nation

Now for the winners...drum roll please! While the drum is rolling, I want you to know that the scores were calculated two different ways to assure fairness and accuracy and the were tabulated twice to assure correctness! The scores were exactly the same each time...whew!

1st Place and the winner of the $20 Gift Certificate*...................Jared "Less is" Moore
2nd Place and the winner of the $10 Gift Certificate*..................Richard "Left Lane" Lopiccolo
3rd Place and the winner of the $5 Gift Certificate*.....................John "Gianni Bugno" Duke

*Gift Certificates are to Cycle Sports on Palafox in Pensacola.

Congratulations to our winners!!! Uh, don't spend it all in one place...

Now, for some cycling housekeeping:

Tomorrow morning's ride will start at Fish and Wildlife as indicated on the Rides Calendar. However, the temperature at 8am is for 40 degrees, so we will delay the start until 9am when the temp is supposed to be 46 degrees. I'm looking forward to getting in some much needed miles, even if it is a bit chilly. Just means we'll be going a bit slower and probably a bit shorter. Besides it is supposed to be bright sunshine, so hopefully it won't feel like 40s...yeah right!

See you out on the road,
Bob

Happy New Year!!! ...and A Contest!

Happy and prosperous 2011 to all!

As you no doubt have all read, the last ride of the old year was one to remember. I have heard from several of the riders that the infamous Garcon Point Bridge did not disappoint yet again. That indeed has to be one of the all time most difficult stretches of roadway for cyclists in our area. It's not the hump or the traffic, it's the exposure to that brutal headwind.

Well, as Coolio says, "Wind make you strong like bull." (I think he said that while sitting in Krispy Kreme devouring his third Pumpkin Spice donut and flushing it down with some of that bellywash.)

Anyway, we're off and running, uh, riding in the New Year! I wonder what this year holds for the Firestone and Summit Cyclists...hopefully less crashes than 2010! And hopefully more long rides with a great cast of characters. Whatever the case may be for 2011, I'm sure there will be plenty of peloton antics along with the ever present bantering from you know who...

I can't wait! This is the best group of goofballs this cyclist has ever had the pleasure of riding down the road with! Sure we can hammer and even put in some rompin, stompin sprints...but we don't take ourselves too seriously. I love that about our group!

So, with that, here's a New Year's toast, (everybody hold up your water bottle) to a great 2011 full of great riding with The Firestone and Summit Cycling Group!!! I can almost hear my pal from Britian, Keith "Big Motor" Irwin, "Cheers gents!" Fancy that?!

Okay, now for a wee bit of fun, (sorry, I'm stuck on Keith's accent), at the start of this exciting New Year:

A CONTEST!!!

Everybody loves a contest, especially one where you can actually win a prize. And the prizes are as follows:
1st Place..............................$20 gift certificate*
2nd Place.............................$10 gift certificate*
3rd Place..............................$5 gift certificate*

*Cycle Sports bicycle shop on Palafox in Pensacola.
