ABOUT OUR GROUP

The cycling group of Firestone and Summit, part of the West Florida Wheelmen family, is a bunch of fun loving men and women who enjoy riding together. At times, we can be very competitive, however we never take ourselves too seriously. It is important to note, if you are riding with us for the first time, that safety is our chief concern. In our 7 years of riding together, (as of this writing), we have only had three accidents that were considered serious.  Most all of us pay close attention when riding in a paceline and will instruct others who may be a bit careless. If this happens to you, don't take offense, just know that others are trying to help the group as a whole.

Our rides vary in length and degree of fitness required.

Generally speaking, the Saturday morning rides are the longest and the pace is usually Moderate. (See Pace Chart page for clarification) On these longer rides, (40 to 70 miles), we always have planned stops around every 20 to 25 miles. These rides usually have a short route group and a full length route group.
Sunday afternoon rides are quite a bit shorter and are definitely the easiest weekly ride. Usually 20 to 25 miles with a pace that is Easy to Moderate.
Tuesday evening rides are the most difficult of all our rides. Although the distance is around 20 to 25 miles, the pace is Moderate to Very Fast. (Usually with a sprint or two thrown in for fun) Although the Tuesday evening ride does not have a No Drop Rule, mainly because we are in close to home and the ride is short, our other rides do have a No Drop Rule.

The No Drop Rule, means we will wait for you at all turns along the route. We will not leave you out on the road if you flat or have a mechanical or are having a bad day. However, that being stated, please note that it is of the utmost importance that you deem yourself of a level of fitness and have the type of bicycle that can handle the route chosen for that day. In other words, if you haven't ridden in weeks and/or your machine is in disrepair, you would not enjoy riding with our group on a Saturday or Tuesday ride. Sunday would be a better choice.

We welcome all new riders and look forward to meeting you soon. If you have any questions or concerns about which ride would be best suited for you or would like some more information regarding the Firestone and Summit Cycling Group please email us at:  rjgravesjr@cox.net

Hope to see you soon!
